A specialist physician/Internist is a specialist medical doctor dealing with complicated medical conditions and complex medical treatment and management plans.
Difficult to diagnose and complex diseases are being referred to specialist physicians by general practitioners and colleagues from other specialist disciplines
(i.e. surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons).
Specialist physicians typically work in a consultation room setting, emergency setting,
and general hospital setting and in intensive care units. Several clinical technologists work closely with the physician to get to a final diagnosis and management plan
(heart sonars, ECG, Stress ECG, 24 Hour ECG and blood pressure monitoring, lung functions, sleep studies). The specialist physician can be regarded as the detective in medicine collecting all the clues to detect the affliction.
Physicians complete at least four years of additional training in a medical specialisation after their basic medical degree and internship.
